Contributions to MPEG standard

on .

SocialSensor has been actively pursuing standardization activities in order to recommend its findings and results to standardization bodies.

In this context, MPEG-7 contains a basic User Descriptor Scheme. However, this scheme is insufficiently expressive to represent the SocialSensor use-cases adequately. The consortium proposed an extension to the MPEG-7 standard to account for this discrepancy, which is currently under investigation.

SocialSensor has also identified the concept of Dynamic Social COntainers (DySCOs), as eligible for standardisation. DySCO is a new layer of online multimedia content organisation with particular emphasis on the real-time, social and contextual nature of content and information consumption. Via the University of Klagenfurt the consortium got in contact with representatives of the MPEG-21 standard since there seems to be substantial overlap between the MPEG-21 "Digital Item" and DySCO. SocialSensor could possibly adopt the MPEG-21 standards and propose extensions via amendments to the standard when necessary.

In these communications with MPEG, the following contributions to the MPEG standardization have been achieved so far:
