The Department of Information Technology (ITEC) at Universitaet Klagenfurt, Austria, comprises two research groups: Distributed Multimedia Systems (Prof. Böszörmenyi) and Multimedia Communication (Prof. Hellwagner). For many years, a common research focus has been Comprehensive Adaptation in Distributed Multimedia Systems. In the course of several national and international projects and collaborations, many facets of dynamic multimedia content stream adaptation are addressed.
The research team focuses on the following research areas: Utilization and deployment of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) for content-aware network environments (EC FP7 project ALICANTE), MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), prototype VLC-based implementations, and QoE evaluations; MPEG Representation of Sensory Effect (RoSE) a.k.a. MPEG-V Sensory Information, specifically work on optimization techniques for improved Quality of Experience (QoE); MPEG Extensible Middleware (MXM), specifically work on interface definition and reference implementations related to multimedia content adaptation; Digital Item Adaptation (DIA) in the MPEG-21 standard, specifically work on the generic Bitstream Description (gBSD) concept and device-/coding format-independent content adaptation, SVC file format, notably efficient adaptation approaches using extraction paths; Utilization and deployment of SVC and MPEG-21 metadata within a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) environment (EC FP7 project P2P-Next), utilization and deployment of SVC for IPTV scenarios in the FFG project SCALIPTV; Transport (streaming) and processing of MPEG-21 metadata for the purpose of distributed content adaptation, specifically in the EC FP6 Projects DANAE and ENTHRONE II; Semantics-oriented adaptation of multimedia contents (in DANAE); Cross-layer multimedia content adaptation based on MPEG-21 concepts (in ENTHRONE); User-centric multimedia services (EC FP6 NoE INTERMEDIA), adaptive, quality-aware video proxy gateway (QBIX), performing video caching and transcoding, network adaptive video streaming and transcoding, application work (mobile multimedia museum guide).
