Report from SSMS 2012 summer school

SocialSensor successfully organised the 6th Summer School on Social Media Modeling and Search (SSMS 2012) in Fira, Santorini, Greece during 10-14 September 2012. SSMS12 was an ACM Chapter Event of the the EuroMM, the European Chapter of the ACM SIGMM. Different topics were covered in the program, including both theoretical and practical aspects of state-of-the-art research in the following multi-disciplinary topics:

  - Large-scale Multimedia Analysis and Retrieval
  - Online Social Interaction Modeling and Analysis
  - Social Graph Analysis and Measures
  -
Social Media Applications and Architecture

35 PhD students, young researchers and practitioners participated in the summer school program, which was aimed towards training professionals and students with 16 internationally renowned speakers from Facebook, Yahoo!, INRIA and many other distinguished researchers. The program also included a Media Industry Day with participation of professionals from the news sector focusing on Social Media and how it affects the news industry, which is one of the SocialSensor use cases.

The students had the opportunity to present their work during the poster session, where they were involved in interesting discussions with their colleagues and lecturers. Awards were given to the best poster, the best SocialSensor-related poster and for the student who made the most interesting comments and who initiated the most interesting discussions on the Social Media Channels of SSMS.

Finally, the summer school hosted an Urban Sensoria Lab workshop, where participants were informed on how novel ubiquitous computing technologies can be used to explore urban places, collect information, and work on a creative project.

A SocialSensor project meeting was organized at the same time allowing a fruitful interaction of project partners with the SSMS program including the Media Industry Day and the students poster session.
